FLAG DAY Transport: ---------------------------------- - It's waaaay cheaper per pound to transport something on the JW than to ship it in from the East. - Weaver planning to bring all water from SF; much easier than driving JW around Reno -- Although if plane pussies rent a vehicle in Reno we could use it for errands the night before - Flyers: Flyers will likely rent a vehicle, but have option of doing a rideshare. Bikes would be much easier to bring in a rental vehicle. From memory: Finances: - holy shit is fuel expensive. Plan A to BRC could run near $4k in fuel - discussion about cost distribution - It's important not to screw the plane pussies, it's also important not to screw the people who are hauling everything that makes our camp awesome. - RESOLVED: there will be communal cost sharing, flyers or not. Everyone will bear the load. Could be as simple as 'total cost / campers.' Details TBD - Not discussed: the bar supplies are covered, curtousey of U-WEEE - Not discussed: weaver's covering costs of getting the JW prepped, gettingg all that water, getting whatever food is deemed to need to travel with the JW, the oranjeboom, and getting the JW to & from the playa. this is non-negotiable. ----- Man, the meeting was RADICAL AWESOME, especially for us all-by-ourselves-until-the-burn types. It's all coming back to me. (very very productive meeting, too) I went out and tried to hit all of my todos, and was slightly thwarted by the (unsurprising) fact that costco and the surplus store were closed for Memorial Day. Here are a lot of words with a summary at the end: - I grabbed 12 of the battery-powered LED christmas lights, and only afterwards did I try turning one of them on; turns out that they're green and blinky instead of white and steady. Not as pretty as I had hoped, but they still provide light and are only $1.50 a pop for 11 LEDs each. I'm going to mod some to be always-on, and some to take 2x C cells (instead of 2x AA). - One of the bartender complaints last time was that the broth containers were a pain to pour from. I picked up a couple of these , which are pretty much Exactly What You Want. I'll pick up at least a few more (there were only two at the store), because I bet that they'll be equally useful for lime juice or hot sauce. - The xmas lights will be good for bikes (I'll bring batteries and cable ties/electrical tape for attaching them) but not so great for the peoples. Last time, I carried an LED glow stick. I left it on all night every night, and the batteries are *still* working in it. There are some fancy ones out there (do a google shopping search for "led glow stick"), but I'm thinking of buying a bunch (20? 30?) of some cheap-but-advertised-to-be-decent ones. These are only 1.60 each. - Remember the moopy-as-hell minigolf astroturf we used as round cover last time? I am not exaggerating when I say that we spent at least a man-hour cleaning up all of the little green threads stuck to the playa after rolling up the carpet. Right now at World Market, they have super-durable 5' x 6.5' outdoor carpets, made out of jute or hemp or some shit with some kinda Asian patten, for a reasonable price. They don't pack as tightly as the astroturf, but they're very light and much more manageable. What say I pick up two or three of them? (Let me know) - BevMo has vodka just as cheap as the fucking awful vodka we got last time ($10 for 1.75 litre); I plan to gamble on the new cheap stuff in the hopes that it tastes a little better. (weaver, did you hold onto our extra inventory from last time?) - When we ran out of horseradish last time, at one point we started using wasabi. How was that? I can get big tubes of wasabi on the cheap at the Japanese grocery; they'd be a lot easier to store, transport, and dispose of than fresh grated horseradish. (I'll get some real horseradish as well, but we could save it for our Top Shelf customers.) - Even though the surplus store was closed, I realized that I wrote down the prices and such for the shade mesh the last time I was there. If you remember the big black pyramid with the grass growing in it from 2006, this is the mesh that they used to cover the thing. They've got black and desert mesh, 16'x20' for $70, 10'x16' for $37. Do y'all think that one 16x20 plus the penguin banner will do it? I'll probably get black unless someone really wants desert/khaki. Executive question summary: - Should I go ahead and order 20-30 LED glow sticks for personal lighting? We can always give extras to dumbasses walking around at night without lighting. - Should I pick up some (two or three?) 5' x 6.5' outdoor carpets to replace the moopy astroturf? - Is wasabi paste a suitable alternative to grated horseradish? - Is one 16x20 shade mesh (plus the penguin banner) enough to handle our shade needs? - chaps: assless or not? The only need-to-know-soon thing is the carpets, 'cause they're only on sale until 6/1. peace up --dbort ------------------------ Alison's note General consensus was that Bort should forge ahead with his purchase plan. There were several requests for assless chaps. :)
